DISC BRAKE CONVERSION INSTRUCTIONS
READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY BEFORE INSTALLING THIS KIT.
BEFORE BEGINNING INSTALLATION, MAKE SURE YOUR WHEELS FIT ON THE DISC ROTOR.
Make sure this kit fits your application before painting
or plating. Parts that have been painted, plated or modified may not be
returned.
- This Conversion Kit uses the following components:
ROTORS
68-72 Chevelle or GM Equivalent
CALIPERS
79-86 Malibu or GM Equivalent
BEARINGS & SEALS
A-6 Inner bearings
A-2 Outer bearings
7934S Grease seals
- Remove the drum brake assembly so all that remains is the stock spindle.
Inspect the spindles for grooves and cracks. A piece of 180 grit emery
cloth can be used to clean the spindle. Be sure to clean the 5/8"
threaded hole at the top of the spindle. Use a threaded tap if necessary.
- In order to install the inner bearing, the spindle surface may need
to be taken down. This can be done with 180 grit emery cloth. Do this until
the bearing slides onto the spindle with out binding. This may need to
be repeated for the outer bearing.
- Install the caliper bracket to the spindle with the 5/8" X 1"
bolt through the bracket and into the threaded hole in the top of the spindle.
Install the stock steering arms placing the provided spacer between the
spindle and the steering arm on the side of the spindle which the bracket
is not attached to.
- Pack the wheel bearings in a high quality bearing grease and install
them in the rotor followed by the grease seal. Install the rotor onto the
spindle using the bearing retaining washer and spindle nut to hold everything
together.
- With the rotor installed, check for proper clearances between the rotor
and the mounting.
NOTE: 5/8" I.D. anchor bolt spacer for use on 1959-64 only. Discard
for for 1955-58 applications.
Warning!!
Stock drum brake wheels may not work with disc brake conversions. Drum brake
wheels were not made with disc brakes in mind so there may be wheel to caliper
clearance problems. Before installing this kit, make sure your wheels fit
the brake assembly.
For those wanting to keep stock wheels that interfere with the installation,
there are companies such as Wheelsmith, Stockton Wheel Co. and Wheel Vintiques
that can remove the original wheel centers and re-install them into a new
disc brake rim. Please call for more information.
